Actually, you can announce that you're following someone if you want to put them off. You'd be amazed at how tense a lot of people get when they are told that you are watching them...

if surrounded always head for the area with the least amount of opponents. A least that way you have better odds.

yeah but what i meant was that there could be a few other people from the same team around, and that's one way to come down with lead poisoning

I'd actually recommending running to the area with the most red dots if it's a slayer game, because it is likely that those people will be too busy fighting each other to attack you - and you can pick off the winners when they've got no shield left (I've dubbed this the "Daniel and Richard" tactic, because those two tend to use it the most )
